Flyers, Stickers, and Storefronts: The Transient Monuments of New York City’s Immigrant Communities

MA, Design Research, Writing & Criticism, School of Visual Arts

In my thesis, I asked:

  • How does ephemeral printed matter in immigrant enclaves reveal and spatialize attitudes toward national assertions of identity?
  • How does the storefront window function as a site of display to broadcast and signal these attitudes in a time of anti-immigrant sentiment?
  • How do people outside of the professional practice of design engage in the design of communications that signal the evolving cultural identities of immigrants?

Research Interests

What I'm asking

I’m interested in how design is a mediator (as reflection, commodification, or product) of cultural values, identities, and global sociopolitical histories, and how the built environment spatializes and performs these narratives. I’ve always felt that there is an ongoing dialogue between the self and place, that the two shape each other, and it is my mission to identify and engage the sites—from national museum exhibition to local enclave storefront—where this dialogue unfolds in real time.
